Steven Cole Hughes, MFA - Director of Theatre . Assistant Professor

Steven Cole Hughes is an actor, director, playwright and Assistant Professor of Theatre at Western Colorado University. At WCU he has directed Hamlet, Orlando, The Presidents!, Twelfth Night, A Midsummer Night’s Dream and A Doll’s House. He has a BA in Theatre from Indiana University and an MFA from the National Theatre Conservatory.

As an actor, he has appeared at the Denver Center for the Performing Arts, Colorado Shakespeare Festival, Creede Repertory Theatre, Curious Theatre, Arvada Center, Theatre Aspen, Theatreworks in Colorado Springs, Baltimore Centerstage and Portland Centerstage. His film and television credits include "Law & Order," “Law & Order: Criminal Intent,” “Easy Money,” and the feature film Searching for Fortune.

As a playwright, his plays have been produced at the Bloomington Playwrights Project, the Coterie Theatre, Creede Repertory Theatre, Curious Theatre Company and the Denver Center for the Performing Arts. He is the winner of the 2008 Denver Post Ovation Award for Best New Work for Billy Hell, and the 2011 Ovation Award for Special Achievement for The Billy Trilogy.

As a director, he directed an Off Off Broadway production of Shakespeare’s Richard II for Fight or Flight Theatre, and he won the 2011 Triangle Award for Best Director for Henry V at the Burning Coal Theatre Company in Raleigh, NC.
